Les Chroniques de J. Froissart by Mme. De Witt, nee Guizot, 1881
Edition Abregee avec texte rapproche du Francais Moderne.
Published by Librarie Hachette et Cie, Paris, 1881.
Jean Froissart was a medieval French author who lived from c. 1337 to 1405. This work, Chronicles, is seen as the principal work detailing the chivalric revival of 14th Century England and France. His work has inspired more than 100 illuminated manuscripts.
A truly stunning production. Outer covers are highly decorated gilded cloth over board. Outer covers are near fine except for 3 small holes on the rear and one scratch. The interior of the book is largely in fine condition. The text is beautiful, and lavishly illustrated with guarded colour plates and profusely with black and white etchings. Page edges are bright gilt.
The book is missing its first front free endpapers and around 3 introductory blanks/pages, and the first text section is beginning to loosen. Ink stamp over date on title page. Rear endpapers beginning to crack.
The text itself could not be brighter for a book from 1881.
A large and heavy book of 840pp. Weighs approx 3kg unpacked.
Dimensions: approx 280mm high x 207mm wide x 57mm deep.
