Object Teaching: Sciences, Machines and Processes, Exhibited in and Described by Large Sheet Drawings; And a Companion Handbook consisting of Letterpress Essays, Engravings and Woodcuts.
Edited by Robert Scott Burn.
Published by A Fullarton and Company, London, Edinburgh and New York.
This is a very scarce publication we have not come across before. Very large elephant folio sized book, containing very large illustrated plates.
Undated but believed to be 1868 (though previous owner has marked in pencil 1845).
Only 3 copies found in Copac - National Library of Scotland, British Library and Oxford University.
This is the volume of 40 large format plates, plus some text description, which would have originally been accompanied by a separate smaller format handbook (only the British Library has the handbook on Copac).
Dimensions: Approx 57cm high x 42cm wide x 6cm deep. A heavyweight volume at approx 7kg unpacked.
Covers are half leather, now rather worn and stained, but binding is sound.
The plates vary in condition - the first 9 have mild waterstaining to top corners, the majority are very good and the last 5 plates and description pages also have some heavier waterstaining.
Some pencil annotations. Occasional tear along seams or occasional crease. Some spotting and age discoloration, but overall could still be considered Good condition.
A very scarce and interesting volume.
