We recently acquired a collection of documents and images from W T G Henderson, a Scotsman, who was Oriental Expert for the auction house of Glendining & Co in London from the 1920s and onwards. The content is focused on Japanese art, but also includes Chinese art, as well as more diverse subject areas. Much of this work would have been used when producing auction catalogues of the time.

Glendining & Co, Partial Catalogue of the Lt-Col Gaskell Collection, 1920 (illustrated). The front section and titles are missing. Size 283mm high x 225mm wide. What remains begins as seen in the last of the photos (right hand book), starting with a plate of lots 1057, 449, 463, 1181, 1104, 1079. Sections are loose and the first section is disbound. Text descriptions of lots run from 501 - 1864. But, text order is strange - Begins at 1001 - 1338, there is then a section for lots 501 - 700 (Combs/Kushi, Sake Cups, Lacquer Boxes) then continues again from Lot 1389 - 1481, then back to 1339 (Kakocho), then from 1481A - 1549 (Varia). Then continues from 701 - 1,000. Then from 1550 - 1864. Approx 20 plates in total - each plate typically featuring around 4-6 items, but varies. Plates cover subjects such as: lacquer and carved cases, lacquer boxes, okimono, fan shaped boxes, and sword fittings.
