Burmese food carrier, htamin-gyaing (tiffin basket), 47cm.
This mid 20th Century tiffin box features 4 lidded compartments set within a wooden frame carrier handle. They are topped with a cup set on a shallow plate, on top of a deeper lipped plate.
These became extremely popular during colonial times.
This is a lovely example in excellent condition. Beautiful Yun decoration from Pagan (Bagan). Yok-thei pattern - the design incorporates figures riding on horseback, striding or dancing figures, amongst trees amidst vegetal scrolling, and is topped with a peacock motif.
Provenance: the property of an American diplomat, stationed in Asia in the 1950s and 60s.
