Hymns in Assamese, Gauhati Mission Press, 1890
Very scarce book indeed. Published in 1890, 4th edition.
Unpaginated in English, but estimate around 400 to 500 Assamese numbered pages in its handsomely bound, gold spine-lettered ‘Hymns in Assamese’ full calf leather covers, has two old previous-owner signatures, (one being that of ‘Mrs Jessie Y. Moore’, dated ‘1917’, and one being that of ‘Mrs P.H. Moore, Mowgong, Assam, India’), volume has no foxing to pages, has some notes here and there on a few pages and on the first free end-page, where it states that ‘Many [of the] hymns translated [into Assamese] by Revs William Ward, Miles Bronson, Nathan Brown, Pitt H. Moore [apparently the husband of Mrs. P.H. Moore whose signature appears at front], Henry Goldsmith, [and] Nidhi Levi Farwell’), stamp on title-page, date-slip and pocket at back indicate that this copy once belong to the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary Library, volume has some parting to outside front seam, internally remains strongly bound with all of its material, including all of its ‘Contents’ pages, both in English and Assamese, all of its English and Assamese Index pages, and all of its Hymns, each with the date of their creation and author, including its very last, a ‘Conference Hymn’ entitled ‘Prayer for Assam, 1889, [by] Denfield C.M. [&] Rev. W.E. Witter’, very rare addition, and one of the very very few and far between to be found Assam volumes, originating from Assam itself, for the collector, dating from a century-and-a-quarter back.
Condition good overall. Covers are worn and have taped repairs to joints, but text is very good as described above.
No copies listed in COPAC, and no exact match in Worldcat - only one other 19th Centry Assamese hymn book in the University of Oxford, which is a different imprint.
