The Works of Flavius Josephus, The Learned and Authentic Jewish Historian, and Celebrated Warrior.

Translated by William Whiston, A.M., Professor of Mathematics in the University of Cambridge. With an Introductory Essay, by the Rev. H. Stebbing, D.D. illustrated with Engravings on Steel and Wood.

Published Virtue and Co, London.

A good copy of this very heavy volume at over 2.5kg - xvi + 1055pp + plates. 26.4cm high x 19.4cm wide x 8cm high. Many plates and illustrations including fold-out map of Palestine.

Good condition overall. Three quarters leather cover and green boards - soiled, bumped and worn with some splitting at joint on the head of spine. Label on the spine is worn and deteriorating. Text block has been rebound into its original binding and is secure, with new endpapers, according to a pencil note this was in 1974. The book itself is undated but carries an ink inscription by its owner in 1882. Text is very good overall and in clean condition for age with minimal spotting.

From appearance alone, we would have estimated a date of around 1860, but we have no record of its exact publication date. An uncommon version of this work.
