First published in Paris in 1719, this is David Humphrey's 1721 translation of this work by Father Bernard de Montfaucon. This folio size volume is Volume IV only, and contains many impressive plates. In fair condition at best, as the covers are completely detached, the title page is missing and there is considerable wear to extremities.

Antiquity Explained and Represented in Sculptures, Vol IV, by the Learned Father Montfaucon, Translated into English by David Humphreys, M.A.

Printed by J. Tonson & J. Watts, London, 1721. First English edition.

Both front and rear covers are detached and spine covering is absent. With brown calf leather over boards which is now brittle, rubbed, worn, marked and with losses.

The text has some age discoloration. Title page and any preliminaries are absent. Text begins at p. 3, the first page of Book I "Concerning the levying Soldiers, the Military Habit and Arms of the Infantary of all Nations".

The first text page is disbound and the following few pages creased and worn to extremities. The bulk of the text actually presents very nicely with its high quality Plates. The last dozen pages or so have some staining and ragged losses to corners. Probably one additional final text leaf missing at the rear.

Far from perfect, but priced commensurate to condition, for an uncommon volume.

Text in English.
